My newest basil plant, with bottle for size reference.  I let the plant root
in that same bottle for several weeks.  The roots reached from the top to
the bottom of the bottle and back up, which was probably about 3x more than
was really needed.  This, incidentally, ends up being an excellent way to
keep a sprig of basil fresh fairly indefinitely.
